When Alan Mulally first met with the top executives at Ford Motor Company in 2006, one of the execs who had helped put Ford into its downward spiral told the newly-appointed CEO that the automobile business was very complex.

"The average car is made up of thousands of different parts, and they all have to work together flawlessly," the condescending exec said.
