The recent passing of former Husker assistant football coach John Melton left a severe hole in the hearts of many former Husker players and friends. Melton died on June 8, at the age of 86.

John was on Bob Devaney's staff at Wyoming in 1962 when Husker athletic director Tippy Dye went looking for "just the right man" to fill the open football head coaching job at Nebraska. The right man turned out to be Devaney and he accepted the job and brought along the majority of his coaching staff when he moved to Lincoln.
