BAYARD — The Bayard High School FFA chapter was presented with a $10,000 donation from WESTCO and the Land O’Lakes Foundation on Monday. The donation was made possible by the Land O’Lakes Foundation Coop Match Program.
Bayard FFA will use the funds to purchase a greenhouse, which will increase agricultural experiences for students. Bayard Secondary Principal Kelley Rice said that once the building is in place, the aquaponics system, currently housed in the FFA classroom, would be moved to the greenhouse. This move will allow the greenhouse to become a self-contained horticulture classroom where students can study both aquaponics and soil based plant systems. Approximately 50 Bayard students are involved in the horticulture program each year.
“As a part of our commitment to rural communities where Land O’Lakes, Inc. members, employees and facilities are located, Land O’Lakes Foundation is pleased to match donations by member cooperatives which help enhance the quality of life in their local communities,” Morgan Kinross-Wright, executive director of the Land O’Lakes Foundation said. “We are pleased to support the Bayard FFA program and send our best wishes for success.”
“WESTCO is grateful for the opportunity to partner with the Land O’Lakes Foundation in supporting our schools, students and future agriculture leaders,” WESTCO General Manager David Briggs said. “This investment in the Bayard FFA chapter’s greenhouse will allow students to gain hands-on experience, learn new skills and train them for future careers in agriculture.”
