Opal Muhlenkamp receives Shawna Tatman Memorial Golden Senior Award during Thursday's opening ceremony forthe North Platte Golden Games. Muhlenkamp said it was a shock to receive the award.

The annual Golden Games showcased North Platte senior citizens competing in activities and games at the North Platte Rec Center Thursday.

The day began with coffee and doughnuts, followed by the opening ceremony where Opal Muhlenkamp received the Shawna Tatman Memorial Golden Senior Award. The award’s name is in honor of Shawna Tatman, the former North Platte Senior Center director who died Feb. 27.

Muhlenkamp said she was shocked to win the award.

“I didn’t know I was going to receive the award until I walked in the building today,” Muhlenkamp said.

Muhlenkamp said she worked with Tatman for years and she thought she was so special.

Muhlenkamp volunteered working the lunch line at the senior center and took the money to the bank afterward. She worked alongside her husband, Nick Muhlenkamp.

Muhlenkamp and her husband were two of the volunteers helping to check people in at the Golden Games. Muhlenkamp said she would get to play the games after lunch. Her favorite game is bingo, and she said she has won a few times.

After the ceremony the games opened with music by Ray Mullen singing country tunes. Lunch and entertainment led into the afternoon session of games. The full day of events ended in a prize drawing.

A variety of games were available, including bingo, plinko, dancing, mini golf, blackjack, wheel of fortune, sarsaparilla saloon, speed cup stacking, sweet treat walk, pool ball shoot, ladder ball, photo booth, corn hole, “steer” roping and bowling.
