Sentencing for the former director of North Platte Kids Academy on an embezzlement charge was delayed Monday for two weeks after the sentencing judge recused himself.

Lincoln County District Judge Richard Birch cited a conflict of interest revealed by the presentence investigation of Michelle L. Seidler in removing himself from further proceedings.

Seidler, 44, now will be sentenced May 20 by District Judge Michael Piccolo on one felony count of theft by deception worth $5,000 or more. She pleaded no contest March 11 in exchange for prosecutors’ dismissal of two related felony counts.

Seidler, who had become the child-care center’s leader in August 2016, was fired in January 2018. An investigation found that she had used multiple methods to divert $33,000 from Kids Academy funds into her personal account.

She faces a possible sentence of one to 20 years in prison when she is sentenced. Seidler remains free on her own recognizance.
