North Platte High School had eight athletes compete at the All-Class State Powerlifting Meet on Friday at Creighton Prep High School in Omaha.

Athletes competed in the bench press, squat and deadlift against athletes in their respective weight classes. Lifters earned trophies and/or medals by placing in the top five for total pounds lifted in their respective weight class.

Lexington won the girls championship and Creighton Prep won the boys title.

"I was very pleased with the efforts of our lifters. Powerlifting is a great way for athletes to measure themselves (against) other athletes," North Platte powerlifting and football coach Todd Rice said. "We need to continue to improve our overall strength level at NPHS, and competing in these meets will help us achieve that goal. Improved strength correlates to improved athleticism. We hope that our strength and conditioning program at the high school aides all of our athletic programs."

North Platte added powerlifting as a club activity this year.

"I appreciate the administrative support for this group," Rice said. "We also continue to make our high school weight room accessible before and after school for all grade 7-12 athletes."
