GRAND ISLAND — The North Platte First Nationals juniors split a pair of games on Saturday as part of the Hastings/Grand Island/Kearney Tournament.
North Platte (21-3) began the day by defeating Ralston 6-5 before falling to Omaha Westside 5-3. The First Nationals began the tourney on Friday, getting a Blake Barner no-hitter in a 12-0 victory over Lincoln North Star in Hastings.
Game 1: North Platte held off a Ralston rally, winning 6-5 in the first game of two on Saturday.
The First Nationals jumped out to an early lead after a four-run top of the second inning.
Jeremiah Seamann opened the scoring, scampering home from third base after a wild pitch. Cody Wright and Derrick Kuhlmann both scored on passed balls, and Tyler Tobey knocked in Jaylan Ruffin with a two-out RBI single, giving North Platte a 4-0 lead.
Ralston chipped away with three runs in the sixth inning, trimming the North Platte lead to 4-3.
North Platte answered with a pair of runs in the seventh via RBI singles from Tate Janas and Wright for a 6-3 advantage.
Ralston got a pair of runs in the seventh, but Tobey got a pop-up to end the game.
Trey Barker started on the mound for North Platte, pitching five innings, allowing one earned run on four hits, walking two and striking out two. Tobey came on in relief and pitched two innings, allowing four runs — three earned — walking three and striking out one.
Game 2: Omaha Westside defeated North Platte 5-3 in the second game of the day. No statistics were available at press time.
North Platte concludes tournament play on Sunday with a 10 a.m. game against Gretna in Kearney.
