HASTINGS — The North Platte First Nationals juniors picked up a big road win on Tuesday, improving their record to 11-1 on the season.
Bryce Butterfield got a strikeout to end the game for North Platte and preserve a 5-4 victory over Hastings.
Butterfield was the third North Platte pitcher after Will Coe started for the First Nationals, throwing 3¤ innings and Tyler Tobey came on in relief for 2ª innings.
Coe allowed two runs — none earned — on three hits, walked three and struck out a pair. Tobey didn’t allow a run, gave up one hit, walked two and struck out two. Butterfield pitched the seventh, allowed two earned runs on three hits, walked none and got the one crucial punchout.
Both teams had seven hits, but Hastings committed six errors, while North Platte had two.
Tate Janas got North Platte on the board in the top of the first inning with an RBI double, scoring Jeremiah Seamann, who reached on an error.
North Platte took a 2-0 lead in the second when Derrick Kuhlmann scored on a passed ball.
Hastings tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the second and another in the third.
The game remained tied until the seventh inning when North Platte scored three after Kuhlmann got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, followed by a Cody Wright two-RBI single.
Butterfield came on in the seventh, allowed two runs, but kept the tying run on base with the game-ending strikeout.
The North Platte juniors have now won seven consecutive games, including going a perfect 4-0 over the weekend as host of their own tourney.
North Platte defeated McCook 11-1 on Friday, Lincoln Northeast 4-3 and Ogallala 11-8 on Saturday and Alliance 9-4 on Sunday.
The North Platte juniors are back in action on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Scottsbluff at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Bill Wood Field in North Platte. The North Platte seniors have a doubleheader at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. at Scottsbluff.
