LINCOLN — The North Platte First Nationals juniors took their show on the road Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader against Lincoln Northeast.
North Platte (28-5) earned a pair of five-inning run-rule victories, winning the first game 12-1 and the second 13-4. The First Nationals have now won fourth straight and seven of their last eight.
Game 1: The First Nationals struck early and often, plating four runs in the top of the first inning, then six more in the third en route to the blowout win.
Tyler Tobey and Tate Janas led the way offensively for North Platte, as Tobey went 2-for-3 with a home run, walk, two runs scored and four RBIs. Janas was also 2-for-3, and added three RBIs.
North Platte outhit LNE 8 to 2 and committed two errors, while LNE had one. Five different North Platte players had a stolen base.
Tobey also earned the victory on the mound, pitching four innings, allowing one run — none earned — on two hits, walking two and striking out three. Cody Wright pitched one inning and did not allow a run or hit, walked two and struck out two.
Game 2: North Platte duplicated its recipe for success from game one, again jumping on LNE early, this time with five runs in the first.
North Platte scored in all five innings and recorded 15 hits and just one error compared to six hits and two errors for LNE.
Jaylan Ruffin, Trey Barker, Derrick Kuhlmann and Will Coe all had two hits, while Tate Janas had three hits and three RBIs to continue his big day at the plate.
Kuhlmann, Carter Kelley and Wright all pitched for the First Nationals, combining to pitch five innings, allowing four runs — three earned — on six hits, walking four and striking out six.
North Platte concludes their weekend trip to Lincoln on Sunday with a doubleheader against Norris at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. On Monday, the First Nationals return home to Bill Wood Field for a juniors-seniors doubleheader against Hastings. The juniors game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. with the seniors to follow.
